Review – Jail House Rock by Liberty Laine

Jail House Rock by Liberty Laine

“I get the strangest feeling that maybe Millie knows she is a little crazy and has absolutely no fucks to give about it. And that thought only makes me like her more.” – Jake Blackwood

  • Contemporary Romance
  • Bounty Hunter/Aspiring Popstar
  • Novella
  • Heat Level 3

Jail House Rock was a short, over-the-top novella about bounty hunter Jake Blackwood and aspiring popstar Millie Coletrain. The blurb warns that this book is “laught out loud ridiculousness, insta-love” and it definitely was. The novella starts with us meeting Millie right before she is about to perform at the local bar. She is quirky, witty and crazy. Just before she is about to take the stage to entertain her 10’s of fans, Jake Blackwoood, a new local bounty hunter, shows up and cuffs her.

“I need a shower and something to sleep in. You got any spare shirts lying around? Or have you Hulk-ripped them all apart in fits of rage whenever criminal masterminds slip away into the night?” -Millie Coletrain

Jake and Mille ended up in the fastest insta-love relationship I have ever read. I’m honestly not against books that have insta-love stories. I believe in love at first sight and believe you can recognize the other half of your soul in a short period of time. When it’s right, it’s right. This was a little more than that, it was pretty much ridiculous. I feel like a lot of people might say that I was fairly warned, so my review and rating shouldn’t reflect my feelings on the speed that their relationship developed. Maybe that’s true, but it still affected my overall feelings on the novella.

Jail House Rock was a quick, funny, escape from reality novella. There were some really good things about it. I highlighted quite a few passages throughout it because of their cleverness. I would recommend it if you are looking for this kind of read in between some heavier titles. I will give this author duo another shot.

“No, Jake Blackwood. Never Christina. Never! It’s Britney, bitch,” – Millie Coletrain. Millie, I completely agree. It’s ALWAYS Britney, bitch.

Review – Bossman by Vi Keeland

Bossman by Vi Keeland

“If you don’t change direction, you may end up where you’re heading.”

  • Contemporary Romance
  • Suit/CEO
  • Standalone
  • Top Book Boyfriend
  • Heat Level 3

Holy, swoon worthy read! I loved this book! There is a reason it was on my Top Dirty Dozen Books of 2016 list.  It has everything I love: the perfect hero, the strong, quirky heroine and a story that is outside the normal romance box.

The story begins with Reese struggling to escape a terrible date when Chase, a complete stranger, swoops in to save the date. He effortlessly creates an elaborate backstory of how Reese and himself dated in grade school. He then invites himself and his date to join Reese and her date. The hilarity and ridiculous stories take off from there and continue throughout the book.

The chemistry between Reese and Chase is sizzling. Chase Parker is hot, ridiculously smart and rich. His wit and personality put him on my list of Top Book Boyfriends. Besides being all of the things I love about normal suits, he has heart and a deeper story underneath it all.

This book is about love, forgiveness, understanding and finding the strength to go on with life after tragedy. The cover, title and blurb don’t accurately express the beauty of this story. It’s so much more than the superficial rich guy, reticent girl, sex, break up and makeup plot we are used to.

I would definitely recommend Bossman. If you are looking for a standalone romance with heart, laughs and a swoony hero, pick this one up. You won’t be disappointed!

Silence Fallen (Mercy Thompson #10) by Patricia Briggs

I’m a HUGE fan of this series. Mercy is easily one of my favorite heroines ever. She is clever, independent and strong. She stands up for what she believes in and doesn’t take shit from anyone. This series has everything that makes Urban Fantasy one of my favorite genres – action, heart, mystery and creatures. If you haven’t met this group of characters yet, do it now! Book one in the series is Moon Called. Release date: 03.07.17

Synopsis for Moon Called (the Silence Fallen blurb might contain spoilers if you haven’t read the series):
Mercy Thompson is a shapeshifter, and while she was raised by werewolves, she can never be one of them, especially after the pack ran her off for having a forbidden love affair. So she’s turned her talent for fixing cars into a business and now runs a one-woman mechanic shop in the Tri-Cities area of Washington State.
But Mercy’s two worlds are colliding. A half-starved teenage boy arrives at her shop looking for work, only to reveal that he’s a newly changed werewolf—on the run and desperately trying to control his animal instincts. Mercy asks her neighbor Adam Hauptman, the Alpha of the local werewolf pack, for assistance.
But Mercy’s act of kindness has unexpected consequences that leave her no choice but to seek help from those she once considered family—the werewolves who abandoned her…

Caraval by Stephanie Garber

Synopsis:
Whatever you’ve heard about Caraval, it doesn’t compare to the reality. It’s more than just a game or a performance. It’s the closest you’ll ever find to magic in this world . . .

Welcome, welcome to Caraval—Stephanie Garber’s sweeping tale of two sisters who escape their ruthless father when they enter the dangerous intrigue of a legendary game.

Scarlett has never left the tiny island where she and her beloved sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval, the far-away, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show, are over.
But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.
Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But she nevertheless becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic with the other players in the game. And whether Caraval is real or not, she must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over, a dangerous domino effect of consequences is set off, and her sister disappears forever.

Wow! #ThatBlurbThough This sounds AWESOME! We are both looking forward to getting our hands on this one. Luckily we don’t have long to wait. This is a debut novel for Stephanie Garber. If the blurb is anything to go by, Garber has the potential to be an extremely talented new voice in the YA fantasy/paranormal world. Release date: 01.31.17

Dirty Filthy Rich Men by Laurelin Paige

Synopsis:
One unexpected and wild weekend with Weston King, and I’m a new woman. He, on the other hand, is the same rich, notorious playboy he’s always been. In other words, not the commitment type.

So even though we had fun those two days and nights, I moved on quickly from our horizontal time together.

Or I thought I did until he offered me a job three months later at his firm in NYC.

Can you blame a girl for thinking we might have a chance together?

What I didn’t anticipate was Donovan Kincaid, Weston’s best friend and business partner. He’s dangerous and dominant and gets under my skin in ways that no other man has.

The worst part? I like it.

From NYT Bestselling author Laurelin Paige, discover a whole new world filled with sex, love, power, romance and dirty, filthy rich men.

Do I honestly need to explain why we can’t wait for this book?! I feel like the blurb is enough. Holy Dirty Filthy Rich Men, Batman! This is exactly the type of book I love to read. I mean it’s no secret that Jill and I LOVE a man in a suit… but 2 of them! Hell yes! Release date: 03.27.17

The Neighborhood (Twin Estates #2) by Stylo Fantome

The first book in this series, Neighbors, took over our lives, and almost every conversation we had with each other for probably a month after reading it. We have spent so much time think, talking and fantasizing about this book that I almost can’t believe we are less than a week away from release day. Jill is the lucky one of us that received the ARC of this book (make sure you look for her review on release day next Tuesday). We are #TeamWulfy going into this book, but with some of the teasers Fantome has been releasing, we have no CLUE what’s going to happen! Release date: 01.17.17

Synopsis for Neighbors (again, no spoilers!):
Things a good neighbor can do for you:
1. Give you a cup of sugar
2. Let you borrow his lawnmower
3. Water your plants while you’re on vacation
4. Make your eyes roll back in your head

Katya Tocci has never paid much attention to who lives next door – her career always kept her too busy. She’s a good girl, working her way to becoming the most sought after cake designer in all of San Francisco.

But even a good girl’s gotta cut loose once in a while, right? So one fake dating profile later, and she’s ready to tarnish her squeaky clean image. Little does she know, her fun time is closer to home than she ever imagined.

Throw in a neighbor who wants to corrupt her, and another who just wants to own her, and her entire world is flipped upside down.

Who knew neighbors could be so helpful?

A Court of Wings and Ruin (A Court of Thorns and Roses #3) by Sarah J. Maas

Even with no official cover it’s still so beautiful I could cry. I more than love this series. I’m obsessed. I fangirl about these books waaaayyy more than most of you want to hear, but #CantStopWontStop. Book #2, A Court of Mist and Fury, WRECKED me. Like, I wasn’t sure I could function for a while after I finished it. I think my husband was worried that a book finally broke me. That’s why it was my #1 Book of 2016 and Jill’s #2. This series follows Feyre through the trials and struggles of her very dangerous and ever-changing life. She is strong in ways I’ve never experienced from a character. Maas weaves a gorgeous, mysterious and sometimes brutal tale that you MUST read. It all starts with book #1, A Court of Thorns and Roses. Release date: 05.02.17

Synopsis for A Court of Thorns and Roses (spoiler free):
When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution for it. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she only knows about from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin–one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world.

As she dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she’s been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an ancient, wicked shadow over the faerie lands is growing, and Feyre must find a way to stop it . . . or doom Tamlin–and his world–forever.

Review – Twisted Palace (Royals #3) by Erin Watt

Twisted Palace by Erin Watt

“I’m a Royal, baby. I don’t run. I fight.”

  • Contemporary Romance
  • High School
  • Third In A Series
  • Heat Level 2 Out Of 5

“These Royals will ruin you…” This is the tagline for the series, and with the first and second book, it was totally true for me. I DEVOURED Paper Princess and Broken Prince. I couldn’t do anything besides read until I finished them. Broken Prince was even in my Top Dirty Dozen of 2016! Reed and Easton made me wish I went to their high school! I wish I felt the same about Twisted Palace…

The book picks up right after the major cliffy we were left with at the end of Broken Prince. Ella is distraught at the Royal mansion, Reed has just been arrested on suspicion of murder and Steve is wandering around the house, a real life ghost from the past. I was hoping that the excitement would continue on from this point. Instead of the action picking up… the story began to just meander on.

I struggled with the pacing of this book. It felt like nothing happened, beyond them going to school and people talking shit. The other thing that just didn’t connect for me was Ella’s character. I felt like we lost the strong, independent girl that was awesome in the first two books. All together, I just felt letdown after the amazingness of books one and two. This author duo has a new book coming out, and I’m planning on reading it. I loved ⅔ of this series enough to read more of their work.

Jill & Rebecca’s 2017 Bookish Challenge

As a reader, I find that sometimes I get comfortable in a genre, and then realize that I haven’t read anything different in ages. I have my little comfort zone, and quite honestly, somebody may have to drag me out of it kicking and screaming. But, if you’re always comfortable, then you aren’t actually growing, and you might just miss the beauty of the unknown.

So Rebecca and I decided that this year we will broaden our horizons, but we both accept that it won’t be an easy task – I may need more than a small push to get started. In order to challenge ourselves and keep focused, we crafted our goals into a challenge…

Jill and Rebecca’s 2017 Bookish Challenge

1. A book written by an author from the state in which we live

I am a firm believer in supporting local artists. During our travels, we always strive to find something from a local artisan to bring back into our home. We should seek to nurture the art-form of local authors as well. Rebecca will be looking at local authors in Utah – Rebecca Ethington (I’m going to exert my influence here!) – while I will be on the search for a fellow Alabamian.

2. A classic

High school and College Lit covered many of these, but there are still many waiting to be discovered.

3. A book recommended by a librarian or book seller

Librarians and book sellers have a veritable fountain of information that is often overlooked. It’s also a good way to meet new people with common interests – because I excel at introverting!

4. A book that has been made into a movie

Ok, I will admit it…I am a book snob. My husband loathes watching movies with me if I have read the book. Apparently, I like to point out exactly where the movie-maker totally screwed it all up. So usually, I either avoid the movie or don’t read the book. I guess it’s time for me to open my heart to all forms of artistic interpretation. *insert heavy sigh of resignation here*

5. A biography or autobiography

I am a lover of fiction so this is a genre that doesn’t come up (in my comfort zone) much. I can see where this genre could be very interesting, and quite possibly as entertaining as fiction.

6. A book recommended by a friend that we wouldn’t have chosen ourselves

While I do have my beloved book comfort zone, there are also some genres that I consciously avoid. My overactive imagination tends to shy away from True Crime, Horror, and Criminal Suspense, but this year we will embrace our book fears!

7. A book written by an author that we haven’t read before

As we step out into the world of the unknown, this challenge will probably take care of itself easily. To a book junkie, finding a new author to love is kind of like finding the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow!

8. A book recommended by one of our favorite authors

I stalk my favorite authors on social media like any good fan-girl should, and occasionally they mention other books that have impressed them. I’ll be grabbing one of those up.

9. A book that has been on our Kindle for over a year

This challenge should be cake because my TBR is OUT OF CONTROL…

10. A book chosen without reading the blurb and based on cover appeal alone

I am guilty…I judge books by their covers. I understand this isn’t reasonable, but I can’t really help myself. Covers are IMPORTANT! However, I always read the blurb to see if it sounds intriguing. This challenge might actually be more interesting to go in the other direction entirely. Maybe I should choose a book with a cover that is unappealing to me – because most times I don’t even give them the fair shot of reading the blurb. I just move right along. Hmm…maybe I’ll do this challenge both ways and test my “cover appeal” theory!

Do you have your own challenge planned? We would love to hear about it. We also welcome you to follow along with us during our challenge. We will need new book recommendations for some of our challenges as well. Do you have a book that you think we should read?

Review – Naughty Boss by Whitney G.

Naughty Boss by Whitney G.

The blurb is too good not to share…

He definitely wasn’t supposed to get that email…

Subject: My Boss.
Have I already told you that I hate my boss today?
Sexy as hell or not, this pompous, arrogant, ASSHOLE asked me to pick up his dry cleaning the second I walked through the door. Then he told me that I needed to take his Jaguar to a car wash that was ten miles outside of the city, but only after I needed to stand in a never-ending line to buy some type of limited, hundred-dollar watch.
I honestly can’t wait to see the look on his face two months from now when I tell him that I’m quitting his company and that he can kiss my ass. KISS. MY. ASS.
All those former fantasies about him kissing me with his “mouth of perfection” or bending me over my desk and filling me with his cock are long over. OVER.
Your bestie,
Mya
PS–Please tell me your day is going better than mine…

Subject: Re: My Boss.
No, you haven’t already told me that you hate your boss today, but seeing as though you’ve sent me this email directly, I know now…
Yes, I did ask you to pick up my dry cleaning the second you arrived to work to day. (Where is it?) And I did tell you to take my Jaguar to the car wash and pick up my thousand-dollar watch. (Thank you for taking five hours to do something that could be accomplished in two.)
You don’t have to wait two months from now to see the look on my face when you tell me you’re quitting. I’m standing outside your office at this very moment. ( Open the door. )
No comment on your “fantasies,” although I highly doubt they’re “long over.”
Your boss,
Michael
PS—Yes. My day is definitely going far better than yours…

  • 3.5 Stars

Whitney G. is queen of the novella. I’ve read another of her novella series and enjoyed 2 out of the 3 of those. When I saw the blurb for this novella, I HAD to give it a shot. I love suit romances to an unhealthy degree. Powerful men in suits are my undoing. Naughty Boss was a good read.

The story is about a demanding publishing house CEO, Michael. He has driven off one executive assistant after another. He has a reputation for being a complete playboy outside of work and a complete asshole at work. Mya see a posting for an executive assistant position with his company and jumps on the chance to work for the famed “Naughty Boss.” It doesn’t take long for her to find out that while he is easy on the eyes, that’s the only thing easy about him.

Mya and Michael’s story continues on as they dance around their growing attraction to each other. I enjoyed the novella, I just wish the ending was more developed. There were a few scenes and exchanges of feelings that felt rushed or like the author didn’t take them quite seriously. I just felt some of it was flippantly written. I’m not sure why the author didn’t make this a full length novel. I think it would have benefitted the story immensely. I’m unsure if I will continue to read this author.

Review – Jacob by Jacquelyn Frank

Jacob by Jacquelyn Frank

“But who, he wondered in a moment’s panic as her nearing heat began to assault him, who enforces the Enforcer?” -Jacob

  • 4 Stars
  • Paranormal Romance
  • Demons
  • First In A Series
  • Heat Level 3

Jacob is the first book of Frank’s Nightwalkers series. In this book we are introduced to a race of elemental demons that live a peaceful existence, except their sometimes uncontrollable lust for humans. It is Jacob the Enforcer’s job to make sure no demon hurts a human while overcome with the temporary madness of their lust.

Jacob has lived a solitary existence because of his duties as Enforcer. He isn’t exactly a crowd favorite because he’s the one that shows up when your urges cannot be controlled. There isn’t a single demon family that has not met with his punishment. This solitary existence is his duty and he carries the burden heavily on his shoulders.

Isabella is just a librarian who is drawn to the moonlight and knowledge. One night, while leaning out of her apartment window, she falls out and ends up in the safety Jacob’s arms. Their meeting goes beyond serendipity, it’s as if the universe literally forced them together. The story and their forbidden relationship builds from this point on.

I loved Jacob. He was strong, kind, intelligent, serious and sexy. He took duty to an extreme level of commitment, and I appreciated him even more for it. Him and Isabella were kind of an opposites attract couple. She liked to joke around with him to try and crack away a little bit of his serious nature. They complimented each other well. I did, at times, find Bella to be a little childish.

The story flowed easily and was quite enjoyable. I loved the different types of elemental demons presented and their unique abilities. I want to be a fire demon so I can travel as smoke! The author wove an addictive tale of love and suspense. I wanted more and more. The detail and thought that was put into building the world and back story was flawless.

This is paranormal romance at its finest, with just the right amount of mystery, action and heat. I think anyone would be able to find something they loved about this well crafted book. I will definitely continue on with this series. The next book is Gideon, and I love him already!

He owns a sex club! How could he NOT be fun at a party? Liam is the guy that we all want to be around because of his infectious positive attitude and sexy charm. He will woo every woman at the party, including our very own Mistress. Maybe she would be willing to moonlight at his club?

Our Mistress in red leather with her red riding crop is a necessity for any good party. She can punish the naughty and reward the good in a very naughty way. We think she would have Liam kissing her boots by midnight. Oh, to be a fly on the wall of that room in his club.

Rhysand, High Lord of The Night Court – A Court of Mist and Fury (A Court of Thorns and Roses #2) by Sarah J Maas

Dark, brooding, killer smile. Rhysand will be the mysterious man in the corner, surveying the party. Once he realizes that it’s safe for him to drop his evil persona, his warmth, kindness and smile will light up the room. Back away, ladies! Jill and I get him at midnight for our kisses. India “Indy” Savage – Rock Chick (Rock Chick #1) by Kristen Ashley

Always one to come to the aid of her friends, regardless of the circumstances, Indy excels at landing herself into trouble. However, she always does it in style. With her classic Rock-N-Roll T-Shirts, flashy belts and cowboy boots, Indy exudes cool. Her over the top personality will make her the life of the party. The fact that she owns an old, retro, cool book store is just icing on the cake.

rock-chick_1400

Mal Ericson – Play (Stage Dive #2) by Kylie Scott

Mal is easily one of the most over the top and ridiculous characters I’ve ever read. He is loud, nonsensical and takes almost nothing seriously. I love him. At our NYE party he will be leading the countdown, at the top of his lungs, while standing on a table. Maybe we can talk him and his band mates into putting on an impromptu concert for us!

T5W – Fictional Items We’d Give As Gifts

Top 5 Wednesday

This week, in the spirit of Christmas, our Top 5 Wednesday is…

Fictional Items We’d Give As Gifts

1. Kate Daniels’ Saber, Slayer

Kate Daniels is the bad ass heroine of Ilona Andrew’s Kate Daniels series of books. Kate doesn’t ever need anyone to fight her battles. She’s independent, courageous and completely fearless, and she doesn’t go anywhere without Slayer. Vampires beware; Slayer will melt your flesh.

And because every girl needs to be able to defend herself from paranormal dangers, Rebecca and I are just going to gift each other with Slayer this year.

Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews

2. Harry Potter’s Invisibility Cloak

Rebecca and I both thought of Harry’s cloak immediately. We can think of a few times that an invisibility cloak would have come in very handy to both of us, especially during the teenage years! I just need to be certain that it remains out of the hands of my children!

Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

3. Nora Sutherlin’s Little Red Riding Crop

Nora Sutherlin is known as Mistress Nora, Red Queen in Tiffany Reisz’s Original Sinners series. She’s the most feared Dominatrix in New York’s BDSM Underground.

All of our girlfriend’s are getting one of these! What woman hasn’t fantasized about being a crop wielding femme fatale at least once in her life?

The Original Sinners series by Tiffany Reisz

4. Isabelle Lightwood’s Electrum Whip/Serpent Bracelet

Isabelle is a character of Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments series. Her primary weapon of choice is her Electrum Whip that is disguised with Glamour as a Serpent Bracelet so that Mundanes are none the wiser. We can think of a few friends that would enjoy a piece of jewelry that transforms into a deadly weapon when needed.

The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare

5. Bella Swan’s Chevy Pickup Truck

I’m not certain who we’re going to gift it to because Rebecca and I both want it for ourselves. We both love old trucks!

Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer
