Review – Taking Turns by J.A. Huss

Taking Turns (Turning #1) by J.A. Huss

  • Contemporary Romance
  • Ménage
  • Suits
  • First In A Series

When I first saw the description and cover for Taking Turns, before it released, I wasn’t sure it was my thing. The description was kind of strange and made it sound like a captivity book. For the record, I do not read captivity, slave or true Stockholm syndrome books. They give me the creeps. This is not a captivity book! Once I started seeing the reviews roll in confirming it was not, I decided to read it. Holy. Shit. I was not disappointed.

This review is going to be mostly vague feelings about the book. To give you anything else would surely ruin your enjoyment of the story. I can’t even explain how it begins because it’s something you just have to read. It has everything a great erotica novel needs – lots of dirty bits and loveable characters. Now don’t start thinking this is all heat and no content or story. It has a strong and mysterious storyline that drew me in deep from the first page.

Taking Turns is one of those books that will stick with me. I could feel the book hangover as soon as I finished it. Hell, I considered going back to page 1 and reading it again. To say I enjoyed this book would be a massive understatement. I. Fucking. Loved. It. I know I will re-read this book, and I know it is one of my top reads of the year. I cannot wait for the second book in the series, Turning Back, to release 4.12.17.

Review – The Truth About Love by Anna Bloom

The Truth About Love Vol. 1 by Anna Bloom

Blurb-

Eve Harris has always had a point to prove: where you come from doesn’t matter, it’s what you aim for that counts. She has it all planned; find the perfect teaching job, live with her best friend, Cherry, and never get dragged back into the destructive world of her youth.

The last thing she expects is to bump into millionaire heir Cameron Wallis on her last day on campus. Nor is she expecting to discover that when she gives him a chance to win her over he’s nothing like the playboy the newspapers paint him to be.

Will Eve be able to let go of her judgements and embrace a spontaneous affair with Cam that isn’t part of her plan? Or will the constraints from both their families prevent Cam and Eve from discovering The Truth About Love?

The Truth About Love Vol.I is the first novella in a serial About finding love even when you’re least expecting it.

  • Contemporary Romance
  • College Age
  • First In A Serial Series
  • Release Date 2.6.17

This charming little novella kind of landed in my lap by surprise. I’m actually a fan of serials and novella series, so when I was provided a copy for an honest review, I was excited about it. The blurb sounds exactly like my kind of thing. Rich man? Check. Girl with a troubled past? Double Check. I’m so glad I got the chance to find this author and read The Truth About Love because I loved it.

The story follows Eve who is freshly graduated from college and about to embark on the arduous task of becoming a full fledged adult and finding a real job. Eve is a little jaded and at times, a lot judgemental. The author showed Eve’s maturity even with her having a judgmental side. I never felt like her character was unnecessarily mean or judgy. The glimpses into her personality that we received in this first installment have me excited for the future of Eve’s character.

While Eve is studying for her last final she catches the eye of billionaire heir Cameron. He has been splashed all over the society pages for years and has quite the reputation for being a playboy. I loved him! He is the epitome of don’t believe everything you hear. His character was so kind, fun, sexy and out of character for a “rich boy.” He is definitely one of my new book boyfriends.

Overall the story flowed well and the characters impressed me. Ms. Bloom has a very polished and easy to read writing style. I also enjoyed how British the story is. I feel like a lot of the times author waterdown their British terms and slang for us poor Americans, but she definitely didn’t. I really appreciated it and it gave the characters authenticity. I cannot wait to get my hands on the next installment of this serial and learn more about Eve’s best friends Cherry. I would definitely recommend this one for a nice escape into a romance novella.

Review – Defy by L.J. Shen

 defy-release-banner

Defy (Sinners of Saint #0.5) by L.J Shen

Blurb:

My name is Melody Greene, and I have a confession to make.

I slept with my student, a senior in high school.

Multiple times.

I had multiple orgasms.

In multiple positions.

I slept with my student and I enjoyed it.

I slept with my student and I’d do it all over again if I could turn back time.

My name is Melody Greene, and I got kicked out of my position as a teacher and did my walk of shame a la Cersei Lannister from the principal’s office, minutes after said principal threatened to call the cops on me.

My name is Melody Greene, and I did something bad because it made me feel good.

Here is why it was totally worth it.

Defy is a smutty, insta-love, insta-lust short novella. Defy is a prequel to Vicious (Sinners of Saint #1). It is recommended, but unnecessary, to read Defy before reading Vicious.

  • Contemporary Romance
  • Teacher/High School Student (18)
  • Prequel Novella to Vicious
  • Heat Level 2

It’s no secret that I LOVED Vicious. It was a fantastic book with amazing characters (read my review here). I was so jazzed up when I saw that Defy was Jamie and Melody’s story. I just can’t get enough of the HotHoles and their crazy antics.

Defy is the best kind of novella. It read like a full length book and the story never felt rushed. Ms. Shen did a great job of managing the timeline and developing a believable, heartfelt love story, even with the taboo subject of an 18 year old student and his high school teacher. It was a perfectly crafted story that never felt wrong. Jamie is mature and responsible. There is nothing childish about him or his feelings for Melody. I loved this novella.

I can’t wait for the next character’s book in this series. I need more Vicious and the HotHoles. Defy showed us a little bit more of Vicious and why his nickname is so fitting. I’m not sure he can do any wrong in my eyes, even if he is a huge jerk. I unapologetically love him. Check this series out! It’s addictive.

Review – Vicious (Sinners of Saint #1) by L.J. Shen

Vicious (Sinners of Saint #1) by L.J. Shen

“Because moments like these reminded me that my life was hard, but not bad. There was a difference between the two. A hard life equaled a life full of obstacles and challenging moments but also full of people you loved and cared about. A bad life equaled an empty life. One that wasn’t necessarily hard or challenging but was devoid of the people you loved and cared about.” – Emilia

  • Contemporary Romance
  • Suit/CEO
  • First In A Series
  • Heat Level 2

Vicious is a different kind of book. It’s not always easy to follow or read, but it is totally worth it. I found myself rather lost and confused in the very first chapter. I even stopped reading and checked to see if I missed a novella before this first book that would give me some clarity. Nope, the mystery is purposeful, and the author uses this technique a few times throughout the book. You just have to keep reading to unravel the mystery and put all the pieces together. I loved this book!

Emilia aka Millie is an extremely lovable character. She is humble, strong and caring. She makes sacrifice after sacrifice for the ones she loves and never complains or dims her shine. I loved her character and wished we could be best friends. Shen does a great job of making her personality shine through, even though the story jumps between current day and 10 years before. The consistency is refreshing.

“There was a heavily made-up Goth girl leaning against a barstool. She looked at us like most people did. Like Emilia had kidnapped me or like I was her sensible brother. We were so different it was borderline comical. Me with my custom suit, expensive coat, and rich asshole air about me and her with her burgundy-wine sweater, beanie, Christmas leggings, and army boots.” – Vicious

Baron “Vicious” Spencer earned his nickname in high school with good reason. I found his character to be crude and downright mean. There were many times while reading that I just couldn’t believe the things he said! I kept thinking, “what an asshole!” and “there can’t possibly be anything redeemable about his character.” He was so vicious at points that I couldn’t believe I was still reading. He was flawed, spoiled and entitled. But I couldn’t help being pulled in by him and Emilia. By the end, I was cheering for him to turn all of his angry and negativity into a beautiful and compassionate person. I’ll let you decide if he made it there. 😉

I quirked an eyebrow at him and leaned back. “Your IT people are doing a terrible job. I’ve been watching snuff all morning.”

He laughed, and his amusement looked genuine. Rare and brief like cherry blossoms in the spring. But just like the flowers, it died quickly.

“I didn’t peg you for a kink girl, Emilia.” He tucked his hands in his pockets. “Whatever floats your boat, I’d be happy to be captain.”

This book wove an almost murder/mystery type tale with plenty of twists to keep me reading. I wanted to put my life things aside just so I could jump back into Vicious and Emilia’s lives. The supporting cast of characters pulled me into their lives as well, and I’m looking forward to reading their books in the series. I think what I loved the most is that it wasn’t your typical romance book. There were dark themes and secret plotlines happening throughout. I will absolutely be reading the rest of this series, and probably everything else L.J. Shen has written. Don’t let Vicious scare you off, he might be more bark than bite… or not.

Review – Jail House Rock by Liberty Laine

Jail House Rock by Liberty Laine

“I get the strangest feeling that maybe Millie knows she is a little crazy and has absolutely no fucks to give about it. And that thought only makes me like her more.” – Jake Blackwood

  • Contemporary Romance
  • Bounty Hunter/Aspiring Popstar
  • Novella
  • Heat Level 3

Jail House Rock was a short, over-the-top novella about bounty hunter Jake Blackwood and aspiring popstar Millie Coletrain. The blurb warns that this book is “laught out loud ridiculousness, insta-love” and it definitely was. The novella starts with us meeting Millie right before she is about to perform at the local bar. She is quirky, witty and crazy. Just before she is about to take the stage to entertain her 10’s of fans, Jake Blackwoood, a new local bounty hunter, shows up and cuffs her.

“I need a shower and something to sleep in. You got any spare shirts lying around? Or have you Hulk-ripped them all apart in fits of rage whenever criminal masterminds slip away into the night?” -Millie Coletrain

Jake and Mille ended up in the fastest insta-love relationship I have ever read. I’m honestly not against books that have insta-love stories. I believe in love at first sight and believe you can recognize the other half of your soul in a short period of time. When it’s right, it’s right. This was a little more than that, it was pretty much ridiculous. I feel like a lot of people might say that I was fairly warned, so my review and rating shouldn’t reflect my feelings on the speed that their relationship developed. Maybe that’s true, but it still affected my overall feelings on the novella.

Jail House Rock was a quick, funny, escape from reality novella. There were some really good things about it. I highlighted quite a few passages throughout it because of their cleverness. I would recommend it if you are looking for this kind of read in between some heavier titles. I will give this author duo another shot.

“No, Jake Blackwood. Never Christina. Never! It’s Britney, bitch,” – Millie Coletrain. Millie, I completely agree. It’s ALWAYS Britney, bitch.

Bossman by Vi Keeland

“If you don’t change direction, you may end up where you’re heading.”

  • Contemporary Romance
  • Suit/CEO
  • Standalone
  • Top Book Boyfriend
  • Heat Level 3

Holy, swoon worthy read! I loved this book! There is a reason it was on my Top Dirty Dozen Books of 2016 list.  It has everything I love: the perfect hero, the strong, quirky heroine and a story that is outside the normal romance box.

The story begins with Reese struggling to escape a terrible date when Chase, a complete stranger, swoops in to save the date. He effortlessly creates an elaborate backstory of how Reese and himself dated in grade school. He then invites himself and his date to join Reese and her date. The hilarity and ridiculous stories take off from there and continue throughout the book.

The chemistry between Reese and Chase is sizzling. Chase Parker is hot, ridiculously smart and rich. His wit and personality put him on my list of Top Book Boyfriends. Besides being all of the things I love about normal suits, he has heart and a deeper story underneath it all.

This book is about love, forgiveness, understanding and finding the strength to go on with life after tragedy. The cover, title and blurb don’t accurately express the beauty of this story. It’s so much more than the superficial rich guy, reticent girl, sex, break up and makeup plot we are used to.

I would definitely recommend Bossman. If you are looking for a standalone romance with heart, laughs and a swoony hero, pick this one up. You won’t be disappointed!

Review – Twisted Palace (Royals #3) by Erin Watt

Twisted Palace by Erin Watt

“I’m a Royal, baby. I don’t run. I fight.”

  • Contemporary Romance
  • High School
  • Third In A Series
  • Heat Level 2 Out Of 5

“These Royals will ruin you…” This is the tagline for the series, and with the first and second book, it was totally true for me. I DEVOURED Paper Princess and Broken Prince. I couldn’t do anything besides read until I finished them. Broken Prince was even in my Top Dirty Dozen of 2016! Reed and Easton made me wish I went to their high school! I wish I felt the same about Twisted Palace…

The book picks up right after the major cliffy we were left with at the end of Broken Prince. Ella is distraught at the Royal mansion, Reed has just been arrested on suspicion of murder and Steve is wandering around the house, a real life ghost from the past. I was hoping that the excitement would continue on from this point. Instead of the action picking up… the story began to just meander on.

I struggled with the pacing of this book. It felt like nothing happened, beyond them going to school and people talking shit. The other thing that just didn’t connect for me was Ella’s character. I felt like we lost the strong, independent girl that was awesome in the first two books. All together, I just felt letdown after the amazingness of books one and two. This author duo has a new book coming out, and I’m planning on reading it. I loved ⅔ of this series enough to read more of their work.

Review – Naughty Boss by Whitney G.

Naughty Boss by Whitney G.

The blurb is too good not to share…

He definitely wasn’t supposed to get that email…

Subject: My Boss.
Have I already told you that I hate my boss today?
Sexy as hell or not, this pompous, arrogant, ASSHOLE asked me to pick up his dry cleaning the second I walked through the door. Then he told me that I needed to take his Jaguar to a car wash that was ten miles outside of the city, but only after I needed to stand in a never-ending line to buy some type of limited, hundred-dollar watch.
I honestly can’t wait to see the look on his face two months from now when I tell him that I’m quitting his company and that he can kiss my ass. KISS. MY. ASS.
All those former fantasies about him kissing me with his “mouth of perfection” or bending me over my desk and filling me with his cock are long over. OVER.
Your bestie,
Mya
PS–Please tell me your day is going better than mine…

Subject: Re: My Boss.
No, you haven’t already told me that you hate your boss today, but seeing as though you’ve sent me this email directly, I know now…
Yes, I did ask you to pick up my dry cleaning the second you arrived to work to day. (Where is it?) And I did tell you to take my Jaguar to the car wash and pick up my thousand-dollar watch. (Thank you for taking five hours to do something that could be accomplished in two.)
You don’t have to wait two months from now to see the look on my face when you tell me you’re quitting. I’m standing outside your office at this very moment. ( Open the door. )
No comment on your “fantasies,” although I highly doubt they’re “long over.”
Your boss,
Michael
PS—Yes. My day is definitely going far better than yours…

Whitney G. is queen of the novella. I’ve read another of her novella series and enjoyed 2 out of the 3 of those. When I saw the blurb for this novella, I HAD to give it a shot. I love suit romances to an unhealthy degree. Powerful men in suits are my undoing. Naughty Boss was a good read.

The story is about a demanding publishing house CEO, Michael. He has driven off one executive assistant after another. He has a reputation for being a complete playboy outside of work and a complete asshole at work. Mya see a posting for an executive assistant position with his company and jumps on the chance to work for the famed “Naughty Boss.” It doesn’t take long for her to find out that while he is easy on the eyes, that’s the only thing easy about him.

Mya and Michael’s story continues on as they dance around their growing attraction to each other. I enjoyed the novella, I just wish the ending was more developed. There were a few scenes and exchanges of feelings that felt rushed or like the author didn’t take them quite seriously. I just felt some of it was flippantly written. I’m not sure why the author didn’t make this a full length novel. I think it would have benefitted the story immensely. I’m unsure if I will continue to read this author.

Review – Jacob by Jacquelyn Frank

Jacob by Jacquelyn Frank

“But who, he wondered in a moment’s panic as her nearing heat began to assault him, who enforces the Enforcer?” -Jacob

  • 4 Stars
  • Paranormal Romance
  • Demons
  • First In A Series
  • Heat Level 3

Jacob is the first book of Frank’s Nightwalkers series. In this book we are introduced to a race of elemental demons that live a peaceful existence, except their sometimes uncontrollable lust for humans. It is Jacob the Enforcer’s job to make sure no demon hurts a human while overcome with the temporary madness of their lust.

Jacob has lived a solitary existence because of his duties as Enforcer. He isn’t exactly a crowd favorite because he’s the one that shows up when your urges cannot be controlled. There isn’t a single demon family that has not met with his punishment. This solitary existence is his duty and he carries the burden heavily on his shoulders.

Isabella is just a librarian who is drawn to the moonlight and knowledge. One night, while leaning out of her apartment window, she falls out and ends up in the safety Jacob’s arms. Their meeting goes beyond serendipity, it’s as if the universe literally forced them together. The story and their forbidden relationship builds from this point on.

I loved Jacob. He was strong, kind, intelligent, serious and sexy. He took duty to an extreme level of commitment, and I appreciated him even more for it. Him and Isabella were kind of an opposites attract couple. She liked to joke around with him to try and crack away a little bit of his serious nature. They complimented each other well. I did, at times, find Bella to be a little childish.

The story flowed easily and was quite enjoyable. I loved the different types of elemental demons presented and their unique abilities. I want to be a fire demon so I can travel as smoke! The author wove an addictive tale of love and suspense. I wanted more and more. The detail and thought that was put into building the world and back story was flawless.

This is paranormal romance at its finest, with just the right amount of mystery, action and heat. I think anyone would be able to find something they loved about this well crafted book. I will definitely continue on with this series. The next book is Gideon, and I love him already!
